If sinα=3/5,cosβ=12/13, what's cos(α+β)?
Question
Given that sinα=53 and cosβ=1312, prove that one possible value of cos(α+β) is 6533 and find all the other possible values.
Suggestion
Given that sinα=53 and cosβ=1312, prove that one possible value of cos(α+β) is 6533…
Could we draw a diagram with right-angle triangles and the angles α, β and α+β?
If two sides of a right-angle triangle are 3 and 5, what is the third side?
Solution
Given that sinα=53 and cosβ=1312, prove that one possible value of cos(α+β) is 6533 and find all the other possible values.
The diagram tells us that cos(α+β)=cosαcosβ−sinαsinβ for α+β<90∘. This is, in fact, true for all angles α and β.
Now cos2θ+sin2θ=1 for all θ, which means cosα=±54, and sinβ=±135.
Thus cos(α+β)=cosαcosβ−sinαsinβ=±6548±6515, where the signs are independent of each other.
We therefore have four solutions, cos(α+β)=±6563, or ±6533.
