Can we solve the equation 3cosx+1=2sinx?
Question
Find the values of x between 0∘ and 360∘ which satisfy the equation
3cosx+1=2sinx.
Suggestion
Could we rewrite sin(x−α) in a helpful way?
How many solutions would you expect to find in the range?
Can you sketch a graph to illustrate the equation?
Solution
We can rearrange our equation to 2sinx−3cosx=1.
Now we can use the
compound angle identity
to rewrite the left hand side as
2sinx−3cosx=Rsin(x−α)=Rsinxcosα−Rcosxsinα
and matching the coefficients tells us we need
R
and
α
such that
Rcosα=2andRsinα=3.
This reduces to
R2=13⟹R=13andtanα=23andα=56.3∘(1d.p.)
So now our original equation becomes sin(x−56.3∘)=131.
The general solution to this is x=arcsin131+56.3∘orx=180∘−arcsin131+56.3∘ plus an integer multiple of 360∘.
Within the required range this gives us x=72.4∘or220.2∘(1d.p.).
Check – if we have access to a graphing program, we can see where the graphs of y=3cosx+1 and y=2sinx intersect.
