Can we find the minimum value of x2+2/x for x positive?
Question
- Find and simplify the coefficient of x7 in the binomial expansion of (x2+x2)8.
- Calculate the minimum value of x2+x2 for positive values of x.
- Given that y=(x2+x2)8, find the value of dxdy when x=−1.
Solution
The
binomial theorem
says that, if
n
is a positive integer, then
(x+y)n=r=0∑n(rn)xryn−r
where
(rn)=r!(n−r)!n!
So (x2+x2)8 is made up of terms of the form (r8)x2r(x2)8−r.
To find the value of r that gives the term in x7, we require 2r−(8−r)=7, which gives r=5.
So the coefficient of x7 is (58)23, or 448.
If we let
y=x2+x2=x2+2x−1
then we have that
dxdy=2x−2x−2.
Hence,
dxdy=0⟺x=x−2⟺x3=1⟺x=1.
Is this stationary point a minimum? Yes: as x→0 or x→∞, y→∞, so this stationary point has to be a minimum.
The minimum value of the expression is then 12+12=3.
By the
Chain Rule
we have that
dxdy=8(x2+x2)7×dxd(x2+x2)=8(x2+x2)7(2x−2x−2).
So we have
dxdy(−1)=8((−1)2+−12)7(2(−1)−2(−1)−2)=8(1−2)7(−2−2)=8(−1)7(−4)=32.
