Lesson 1 of 1
Uses of EM waves
Each radiation band is good at a different job, decided by how it interacts with matter. Radio and microwave carry communications, infrared warms and images in the dark, visible light feeds cameras and our eyes, ultraviolet makes lamps glow, x-rays peer through flesh to bone, and gamma rays sterilise what heat cannot reach.
What you know already
Every band of the electromagnetic spectrum you have ordered by wavelength also earns its keep somewhere: transmitters, ovens, cameras, hospitals. This lesson walks the bands from radio to gamma and attaches each one to its standard uses, the list examiners expect you to quote from memory.
Key points of understanding
- Radio waves are used for broadcasting and communications.
- Microwaves are used for cooking and satellite transmissions.
- Infrared is used in heaters, night-vision equipment and remote controllers.
- Visible light is used in photography, and ultraviolet in fluorescent lamps.
- X-rays observe internal structure including medical uses; gamma rays sterilise food and medical equipment.
