To add or subtract two matrices, they need to be of the same order (i.e. the same number of rows and columns)
-
If they are of the same order, then
-
to add two matrices, just add the corresponding elements
- (2−351)+(−1−476)=(2+(−1)5+(−4)−3+71+6)=(1417)
-
to subtract two matrices just subtract the corresponding elements
- (2−351)−(−1−476)=(2−(−1)5−(−4)−3−71−6)=(3−109−5)
-
To multiply any matrix by a scalar (a number), multiply each element by that scalar
- If A=(5204) then 2A=2(5204)=(2×52×02×22×4)=(10408)
-
Lower case letters often refer to scalar multiples
- kA is the matrix Amultiplied by the scalar k
Worked Example
A=(−2−22−5)B=(−43−41)
(a) Calculate A+B
Answer:
Add the corresponding elements of the two matrices
A+B=(−2+(−4)−2+32+1−5+(−4))=(−61−93)=(−2−22−5)+(−43−41)
Final answer: A+B=(−61−93)
Given that 2A−nB=(81−132)
(b) find the value of n
Answer:
Multiply all elements of A by 2 to find 2A
2A=(2×(−2)2×(−2)2×22×(−5))=(−4−44−10)=2(−2−22−5)
Multiply all elements of B by n to find nB
nB=(−4n3nn−4n)=n(−43−41)
Subtract the corresponding elements to find 2A−nB
2A−nB=(−4−(−4n)−4−3n4−n−10−(−4n))=(4n−4−3n−44−n4n−10)=(−4−44−10)−(−4n3nn−4n)
Substitute that into the equation from the question
(4n−4−3n−44−n4n−10)=(81−132)
For those two matrices to be equal, the correct value of n must make ALL the corresponding elements equal in the two matrices
- So you can choose any one pair to solve to find n
4n−44nn=3=8=12
It is worth checking the other three pairs of elements with that value of n, to make sure you haven't made a mistake
$4 - 3 = 1 ✔
- 3 ( 3 ) - 4 = - 13 ✔
4 ( 3 ) - 10 = 2 ✔$
n=3
