Formulae and calculations (part 2)
Formulae and calculations (part 2) — the chapter map
SB p.64Part 2 of the formulae-and-calculations chapter extends the mole toolkit you built in Chapter 5 from masses to gases and solutions. This material stands squarely on part 1: everything here is the same "calculate the moles, use the equation, convert to what's asked" three-stage method, applied to two new ways of quoting an amount. By the end you will learn to calculate what volume of gas a reaction produces, and how to work with solution concentrations quoted in mol/dm³.
The two objectives of record for this lesson are both Chemistry-only specification statements — they are assessed in Paper 2 only and are not shared with Science Double Award:
- calculations involving amount of substance, volume and concentration (in mol/dm³) of solution (spec 1.34C);
- calculations involving gas volumes and the molar volume of a gas (24 dm³ and 24 000 cm³ at room temperature and pressure, rtp) (spec 1.35C).
The chapter falls into two clean halves: gas volumes first (Avogadro's law and the molar volume), then solutions (concentration units, the four worked examples, and titration calculations). Master both halves and every gas-and-solution calculation on the course becomes routine.
