Which power of x has the greatest coefficient?
Question
The power of x which has the greatest coefficient in the expansion of (1+21x)10 is
- x2,
- x3,
- x5,
- x10.
Solution
The coefficient of xk, where 1≤k≤10 is a whole number, is ck=10Ck(21)k=(k10)(21)k=k!(10−k)!10!(21)k.
- For k=2, this is 11.25,
- for k=3, this is 15,
- for k=5, this is 7.875,
- for k=10, this is 9.76...×10−4, and so the answer is (b).
Alternatively, look at ckck+1. We have
ckck+1=(k+1)!(9−k)!10!×10!k!(10−k)!×2k+12k=2(k+1)10−k.
So the ck are growing when ckck+1>1, that is, when 10−k>2(k+1)⟺k<38, or k≤2.
So if k=2, then ckck+1>1, which means that c3>c2.
For k>2, we know ckck+1<1, and so ck decreases from its value at c3.
Therefore x3 has the greatest coefficient, and the answer is (b).
