The quadratic equation ax2+bx+c=0 has roots α and β where
- α+β=−ab
- αβ=ac
-
Any new quadratic equations with new roots will have the form
- x2−(sumofroots)x+(productofroots)=0
-
For example, to find the quadratic equation with roots α2 and β2
-
The new equation is x2−(alpha2+beta2)x+alpha2beta2=0
-
You can then work out these coefficients using the identities from before
- alpha2+beta2≡(alpha+beta)2−2alphabeta and alpha2beta2≡(alphabeta)2
- Substitute in α+β=−ab and αβ=ac
-
You should know identities involving powers of products of roots
- α2β2≡(αβ)2
- α3β3≡(αβ)3
- and so on
-
You should know the identity for the sum of the squares of the roots
-
α2+β2≡(α+β)2−2αβ
- which comes from expanding (α+β)2≡α2+β2+2αβ
-
You should know the identity for the sum of the cubes of the roots
-
α3+β3≡(α+β)3−3αβ(α+β)
- which comes from the binomial expansion of (alpha+beta)3
- (alpha+beta)3≡alpha3+3alpha2beta+3alphabeta2+beta3≡alpha3+beta3+3alphabeta(alpha+beta)
- then rearranging
-
You should know how to use algebraic fractions (but do not need to learn these identities)
- α1×β1≡αβ1
- α1+β1≡αβα+β
- βα+αβ≡αβα2+β2
- and so on
Worked Example
The quadratic equation 3x2+12x−1=0 has roots α and β.
Without solving the equation, find a quadratic equation with roots
αβ−α and βα−β
giving your answer in the form Ax2+Bx+C=0 where A, B and C are integers to be determined.
Start with the equation 3x2+12x−1=0
Use α+β=−ab and αβ=ac to find the sum and product of the roots
α+β=−312=−4 and αβ=−31
Form the new equation using x2−(sumofroots)x+(productofroots)=0
x2−(αβ−α+βα−β)x+(αβ−α)(βα−β)=0
Simplify the coefficient of x
Add the algebraic fractions
| β / α - α+α / β - β |=β / α+α / β - (α+β) | | _=(β ^2+α ^2)/(α β) - (α+β) | |
Use (or derive) the identity for the sum of the squares of the roots α2+β2≡(α+β)2−2αβ
=alphabeta(alpha+beta)2−2alphabeta−(alpha+beta)
Substitute in α+β=−4 and αβ=−31
=(−131)(−4)2−2(−131)−(−4)=−46
Now simplify the constant term
Expand the brackets and add the algebraic fractions
| (β / α - α)(α / β - β) |=(β α)/(α β) - α ^2 / β - β ^2 / α+α β | | _=1 - (α ^2 / β+β ^2 / α)+α β | | _=1 - ((α ^3+β ^3))/(α β)+α β | |
Use (or derive) the identity for the sum the cubes of the roots
α3+β3≡(α+β)3−3αβ(α+β)
=1−alphabeta[(alpha+beta)3−3alphabeta(alpha+beta)]+alphabeta
Substitute in α+β=−4 and αβ=−31
=1−(−131)[(−4)3−3(−131)(−4)]+(−131)=1−204−131=−3610
Write out the new quadratic equation
Simplify the coefficients
x2−(−46)x+(−3610)x2+46x−3610=0=0
The question asks for the equation to have integer coefficients
Multiply both sides by 3
3x2+138x−610=0
Don't forget to write=0to get full marks
Any multiple of the answer (e.g.6x2+276x−1220=0) would also be accepted
