Use the three formulae:
- ∑r=1nr=121n(n+1)
- ∑r=1nr2=61n(n+1)(2n+1)
- ∑r=1nr3=141n2(n+1)2
-
Coefficients of r, r2 and r3 can come out of the sum
-
∑r=1n(ar3+br2+cr+d)=a∑r=1nr3+b∑r=1nr2+c∑r=1nr+dn
- Constants are multiplied by n
-
You may have to expand expressions in r
- ∑r=1n(r+3)(r+4)=∑r=1n(r2+7r+12)
-
It is often possible to factorise final answers, in particular taking out:
- fractional coefficients
- n
- (n+1)
-
You may be required to write series as the difference of two sums
- ∑r=510r=∑r=110r−∑r=14r
Exam Hint
Exam questions often refer to these three formulae as the "standard summation formulae".
Worked Example
(a) Using standard summation formulae, show that
∑r=1n(r−1)r(r+1)=141(n−1)n(n+1)(n+2)
Expand and simplify the left-hand side
(r−1)r(r+1)=r3−r=r(r2−1)
Substitute in the formulae ∑r=1nr3=141n2(n+1)2 and ∑r=1nr=121n(n+1)
r=1∑n(r3−r)=141n2(n+1)2−121n(n+1)=r=1∑nr3−r=1∑nr* *
Factorise out the quarter, n and (n+1) then simplify
r=1∑n(r3−r)=141n(n+1)(n2+n−2)=141n(n+1)[n(n+1)−2]
Factorise the quadratic on the right-hand side
r=1∑n(r3−r)==141n(n+1)(n+2)(n−1)
Rearrange into the form asked for by the question
r=1∑n(r−1)r(r+1)=141(n−1)n(n+1)(n+2)
(b) Hence find the value of
0×1×2+1×2×3+2×3×4+...+20×21×22
It helps to write out the first few terms in the series r=1∑n(r−1)r(r+1)
(1−1)×1×(1+1)+(2−1)×2×(2+1)+(3−1)×3×(3+1)+...=0×1×2+1×2×3+2×3×4+...
The question stops at 20 x 21 x 22
This is actually the 21stterm (not the 20th term)
To find the sum of the first 21 terms, substitute n=21 into part (a)
r=1∑21(r−1)r(r+1)=141×20×21×22×23=141(21−1)×21×(21+1)(21+2)
Final answer: 53130
(c) If ∑r=1n(r−1)r(r+1)=10∑r=1nr2, find n.
Substitute the answer from part (a) into the left-hand side
Substitute the standard formula ∑r=1nr2=61n(n+1)(2n+1) into the right-hand side
141(n−1)n(n+1)(n+2)=10×61n(n+1)(2n+1)* *
Cancel the terms n and (n+1) from both sides
It also helps to multiply both sides by 12 to remove fractions
3(n−1)(n+2)=20(2n+1)
Expand, then form and solve a quadratic in equation
3(n2+n−2)3n2−37n−26(3n+2)(n−13)n=−32orn=13=40n+20=0=0
n must be a positive integer (as it is used in sigma notation, ∑r=1n)
n=13
