How could we integrate tan4x?
Question
Given that dxd(tanx)=sec2x, differentiate tan3x with respect to x.
Show that tan4x=tan2xsec2x−sec2x+1 and hence evaluate ∫0π/4tan4xdx.
Solution
Using the chain rule, we have that dxdtan3x=3tan2x×dxdtanx=3tan2xsec2x.
We can write
tan4x=tan2xtan2x=tan2x(sec2x−1)=tan2xsec2x−tan2x=tan2xsec2x−(sec2x−1)=tan2xsec2x−sec2x+1.
…and hence evaluate ∫0π/4tan4xdx.
Using the previous parts,
∫0π/4tan4xdx=∫0π/4tan2xsec2x−sec2x+1dx=[31tan3x−tanx+x]0π/4=31−1+4π=4π−32.
