Can we expand (1+x)3/2+(1−2x)3/4 as far as the term in x3?
Question
Use the binomial theorem to expand
(1+x)23+(1−2x)43
as far as the term in x3.
Solution
The
binomial theorem
says that, if
∣x∣<1
, then
(1+x)r=1+rx+2!r(r−1)x2+3!r(r−1)(r−2)x3+…b
and so to expand
(1+x)23+(1−2x)43
as far as the term in x3, we can
- separately expand (1+x)23 and (1−2x)43 up to x3 and
- collect the terms.
Thus
(1+x)23=1+23x+2!23×21x2+3!23×21×(−21)x3+…=1+23x+83x2−483x3+…,
and
(1−2x)43=1+43(−2x)+2!43×(−41)(−2x)2+3!43×(−41)×(−45)(−2x)3+…=1−23x−83x2−4815x3+…,
and therefore
(1+x)23+(1−2x)43=(1+23x+83x2−483x3)+(1−23x−83x2−4815x3)+…=2−4818x3+…=2−83x3+…
