Can we find the area of this inscribed quadrilateral?
Question
The diagram shows the ellipse whose equation is . The curve cuts the -axis at points and and cuts the -axis at points and . What is the area of the inscribed quadrilateral ?

Solution
If we know the coordinates of the four points , , and , then we can split the quadrilateral into two triangles, and . Using the coordinates, we can find the base () of these triangles and their heights ( and , where is the origin). We can therefore find their areas and add them to obtain the area of .
The areas of the triangles are and ; if we add these together, we obtain for the area of the quadrilateral, that is, half of the product of the diagonals.
This formula is true for any quadrilateral with perpendicular diagonals. Can you see why? Is it true even if the quadrilateral is not convex?
At the points and we have , so the -coordinate must satisfy , that is, or . So from the diagram, we see that and .
Similarly, we have at the points and and so , that is, or . Therefore using the diagram, we get and .
Therefore the triangle has area and has area , and so the quadrilateral has area .
