If a GP has Sn=(3n−2n)/2n−5, what's its common ratio?
Question
For all values of n the sum of n terms of a geometrical progression is 2n−53n−2n. Find its first term and common ratio.
Solution
A geometric progression takes the form a,ar,ar2,…c, where a is the first term and r is the common ratio. We are told that, for each n≥1, a+ar+…b+arn−1=2n−53n−2n.
When n=1, this becomes a=21−531−21=2−43−2=1×24=16.
When n=2, this becomes
a+ar=22−532−22⟹16+16r=2−39−4=5×23=40.
Thus the second term ar=40−16=24, which means that r=1624=23.
