Find an expression for the sum of r2
Question
It is given that r=−1∑nr2 can be written in the form pn3+qn2+rn+s, where p,q,r and s are numbers. By setting n=−1,0,1 and 2, obtain four equations that must be satisfied by p,q,r and s and hence show that ∑r=0nr2=61n(n+1)(2n+1). Given that r=−2∑nr3 can be written in the form an4+bn3+cn2+dn+e, show similarly that ∑r=0nr3=41n2(n+1)2.
Solution
There are ways that we could work out that r=0∑nr2 will be a cubic function, even if we didn’t know the result stated above. You might like to look at Sum estimating to explore this idea.
Let’s substitute
n=−1,0,1
and
2
into the equation
∑r=−1nr2=pn3+qn2+rn+s.
We find
n=−11n=01n=12n=26=−p+q−r+s,=s,=p+q+r+s,=8p+4q+2r+s.
Equation
(2)
tells us that
s=1
, and so the other three equations become
−p+q−rp+q+r8p+4q+2r=0,=1,=5.
Adding equations
(1pr)
and
(2pr)
, we find that
2q=1,
and so we have that
q=21.
Substituting this into our equations leaves us with two remaining;
p+r8p+2r=21,=3.
Equation (1prpr) tells us that r=21−p, and substituting this into equation (2prpr) tells us that 8p+2(21−p)=3, which we rearrange to find that 6p=2⟹p=31. Therefore r=21−p=21−31=61. We’ve calculated that ∑r=−1nr2=31n3+21n2+61n+1. Finally, we write ∑r=0nr2=∑r=−1nr2−1=31n3+21n2+61n=6n(2n2+3n+1)=6n(2n+1)(n+1), as required.
Why do you think that the question gave us r=−1∑nr2 and asked us to substitute n=−1,0,1 and 2, rather than r=0∑nr2 and n=0,1,2 and 3?
This time there are five unknowns, so we should substitute
n=−2,−1,0,1
and
2
into the equation
r=−2∑nr3=an4+bn3+cn2+dn+e.
Doing this yields the equations
n=−2−8n=−1−9n=0−9n=1−8n=20=16a−8b+4c−2d+e,=a−b+c−d+e,=e,=a+b+c+d+e,=16a+8b+4c+2d+e.
Equation
(a4)
tells us that
e=−9
, and so we can substitute this value into the remaining four equations, which gives us
16a−8b+4c−2da−b+c−da+b+c+d16a+8b+4c+2d=1,=0,=1,=9.
Examining equations
(b1)
and
(b4)
we see that they look similar, and so we can add them to find that
32a+8c=10.
Adding equation
(b2)
and
(b3)
we have that
2a+2c=1.
Rearranging this gives
2c=1−2a
, which we substitute into equation
(c1)
to see that
32a+4(1−2a)=10⟹24a=6,
or
a=41⟹c=41.
Substituting these values into the equations
(b1)
,
(b2)
,
(b3)
and
(b4)
gives us
b+d=21,8b+2d=4.
Equation (d1) rearranges to d=21−b, which when substituted into equation (d2) tells us that 8b+2(21−b)=4⟹6b=3⟹b=21,d=0. So we’ve found that ∑r=−2nr3=41n4+21n3+41n2−9. Therefore, ∑r=0nr3=∑r=−2nr3+9=41n4+21n3+41n2=4n2(n2+2n+1)=4n2(n+1)2, as required.
